Schubert - String Quartet No. 14 in D minor Death and the Maiden - I. Allegro
Performed by the Auryn Quartett
Schubert - Quartettsatz (Movement for String Quartet) in C minor, D. 703
Performed by the Kodaly Quartet
This is the first movement, Allegro assai, of a 12th String Quartet which Schubert never completed. In addition to the opening movement, Schubert also composed the first forty bars of a second movement marked Andante. The other compositions which Schubert began during 1820 were similarly abandoned, for the artist was experiencing a severe identity crisis at the time. Nevertheless, the Quartettsatz was the forerunner of the late string quartets for which Schubert is best remembered. Four years after the Quartettsatz, Schubert returned to the genre to write the Rosamunde Quartet, D. 804, which was followed by the Death and the Maiden, D. 810 and the Fifteenth, D. 887. The Quartettsatz received its posthumous premiere on 1 March 1867 in Vienna. A typical performance lasts around 10 minutes.

The main theme of the second movement was used as one of the central musical themes in Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon. It has also been used in a number of other films, including The Hunger, Crimson Tide, The Piano Teacher, Land of the Blind, the HBO miniseries John Adams and The Mechanic. It is supposedly based on a Swedish folk song “se solen sjunker” (“See, the sun is sinking”) by Berg.
