Silence

So expanding on Debussy’s quote of “Music is the silence between the notes.”, I had a music teacher once that asked me “Why are you skipping those notes?” I had no idea what he was talking about because I knew for a fact that I was playing all the notes. I kept looking at the music to see if I was missing these “notes”. Finally he told me rests are notes too. Rests really do add to the music. It sometimes gives the listener false hope… like after this long run there can be a pause that just pops in. It wakes up the listener and almost smacks them in the head making them almost think they slept through the piece…

This is one of the most important things I’ve learned in music… keep the listener listening because every detail counts, even if it is silence.
